Personality

Hayner is incredibly headstrong, and has a very short temper; get him heated up and he could pace and rant for hours. His moodswings can be rather frightening, as he'll be screaming at you one moment, and the next be jumping up and down and suggesting they should go skateboarding or get some ice cream. He's well known for his attitude problem, as he doesn't take crap from anyone (unless he absolutely has to, in which case he'll hate every minute of it and show it.) and is constantly mouthing off. He'll pick a fight with just about anyone, even those who outmatch him, and doesn't seem to show any fear (though really, a lot of it is pride.)
However, despite his hot-headedness, he has a big heart when it comes to his friends, and would do just about anything for them. He's incredibly determined and will fight for whatever he believes in, no matter what the consequences.
He's pretty streetsmart, and is quite intelligent, coming up with most of the plans and ideas while with his friends in Twilight Town, but on certain subjects the hints seem to fly over his head. When it comes to schoolwork, he does have the capacity to do it, but tends to be a bit lazy and tries to push it onto Olette to do, or will procrastinate.

History

During the Kingdom Hearts 2 storyline, the real Hayner isn't seen until Sora awakens and gets to Twilight Town, as the Twilight Town that Roxas was in was a fake digital one.
Prior to meeting Sora, Hayner had become friends with Olette and Pence, and hung out with them all the time in the Usual Spot, the beach, and even at the belltower. He had also developed a rivalry with Seifer's Disciplinary Committee, and disputes were often settled in struggle matches. (Which Hayner happens to be pretty good at; in the manga he is shown defeating Seifer.)
When Sora arrives, Hayner is unable to give Sora any information regarding Riku or Kairi, but they show him to the train station, in which Hayner tells Sora to keep it together after Sora sheds a tear.
Later on, Kairi arrives at Twilight Town, and becomes friends with Hayner and the gang. They tell Kairi to wait for Sora, as he said he was bound to come back. Shortly afterward, Axel shows up and kidnaps Kairi; Hayner tries to stop him, but Axel was easily able to dodge his attack. Hayner, along with Olette and Pence go to the mansion to look for Kairi, but are ambushed by Dusks. They meet up here again with Sora, and enter the mansion. Once Sora solves the computer's password inside the mansion and accesses the digital Twilight Town, Hayner stays behind with Olette and Pence to 'hold down the fort.'

Story at Ares

Hayner had been on his way to the Usual Spot when he suddenly found himself in Ares, with nothing but the clothes on his back and his skateboard. The whole process of being in the white room and getting his living arrangements are kind of fuzzy to him, as at the time he had believed it to be a wild dream, but he had plenty of time to freak out once he had arrived at his new apartment.
He took to the network, seeing answers, but only gained confusion as he found Roxas, whom he did not know, and a different Seifer – one that was four years older, much taller, and didn't remember him.
As his free ride on rent began to run out, Hayner sought a job, posting a notice on the network. He was content to receive two responces: one from Albel, the mail carrier, and one from the Arcadia Police Department; however prior to these responses, the truth serum had been released into the air following the New Year's fireworks. This lead to nervousness on Hayner's part, as he feared he would do something that will cost him a job.
While the truth serum is running loose, Hayner on a whim IMs someone to see if he can find a job, and ends up talking to Marth. They both end up ranting quite a bit as a result of the truth serum, and end up introducing themselves at the end of the conversation.
After some 'tests' which involved Hayner chasing Albel around on a skateboard, and taking a kitten to the crotch, Albel decided that Hayner was worthy enough to assist him in delivering mail in the Cerberus district, which Hayner does immediately after school gets out, and is still doing each day.
He gets an instant message from Seifer shortly after receiving the job for Albel, reminding him that he had received a job for the police department in Arcadia. He finds out he will be working for Seifer in his office, which initially he isn't pleased about, but as he continued talking to him found this Seifer to be very different from the one he had known in Twilight Town. He found himself able to joke around with this Seifer, though he bickered with him just as often. Seifer offered to buy Hayner dinner if he showed up to work on time, an offer which Hayner took up readily as he had been living off of Easy Mac for the past few weeks.
While this is going on, Hayner becomes further confused when Axel shows up again. Hayner is at first hostile towards him, considering their past history, but does warm up to him, and even challenges him to a struggle match (which he loses) it ends up frustrating him greatly, as he had lost to Albel the day before.
Truth serum is still running rampant, and Hayner and Seifer are talking to each other every night after work on the network, the subjects ranging from work, to school, or how Hayner can never remember to give Seifer his coat back. They make plans to fight monsters, along with Roxas.
The day after the plans are made, Sora suddenly arrives in Ares, which sends Axel and Roxas into a state of confusion, which results in Hayner becoming confused as to why they are confused. He asks Sora if he had any news from Twilight Town, any news of Olette and Pence, but he doesn't have any new information.
It doesn't seem that the truth serum is going to go away, as Hayner gets incredibly frustrated by it after blurting something to Axel after Axel appeared in his apartment.
Fuu (whom Hayner knew in Twilight Town as a member of Seifer's gang) arrives, with no recollection of Hayner. After getting the idea from Axel that he should take this as an opportunity to make friends with her, Hayner decides to try it, and gets along with her fairly well. She ends up getting her memory of him back, but thus far doesn't seem to be treating him any differently.
Random conversations with Sora lead to Hayner's meeting Riku on the network, and Hayner finally gets an explanation as to how Roxas knows him. That doesn't clear up the issue of what happened with Seifer, but at least that's one mystery solved.
Also around this time Seifer has developed feelings for Hayner, but Hayner doesn't notice, because the hints are subtle, and it hasn't even entered his mind as a possibility.
Speaking of Seifer, after he heard that Hayner only lives off of instant meals (and has screwed quite a few of them up) he lights a fire under Hayner's ego and challenges him to cook for him, which Hayner does, and it actually ends up tasting pretty good despite the fact that Hayner had no idea what he was doing. They spend the rest of the night playing Super Smash Bros, which Seifer kicks Hayner's butt at over and over, but at least Hayner managed to beat one of the computers. The evening ends with Hayner borrowing Seifer's coat again, and not managing to return it for a good two weeks because he kept forgetting.
Hayner soon learns that Roxas and Axel have gotten together, and is okay with it; he is surprised to learn that they're sleeping together, but that's more the way Seifer presented it to him than the actual news itself.
A short while later, Hayner learns of the Jecht's mission to build a blitzball stadium, and thinks that it would be a really neat sport to play. He decides he's going to try and help kill the 200 malboros needed to begin the project, and won't back down about it, despite the fact that Seifer keeps insisting that he'll get himself killed. It doesn't help that the first time Hayner encounters a malboro, he goes temporarily blind.
Tax season comes around, and Hayner manages to get them in by the skin of his teeth.
Hayner at this point still hasn't realized that Seifer likes him, so when Seifer invites him over to tell him something, he thinks nothing of it. He soon figures it out (it took quite a bit for him to get it too) and becomes incredibly flustered and has no idea how to respond. So he doesn't.
A few days after this, he's still flustered, and it doesn't help that Valentine's day is coming up, or that everyone continues to ask him about Seifer. He does his best to just dodge the questions, but ends up getting incredibly irritated with everyone except Marth, whom he has not told of the things going on.
Seifer and Roxas continually harassed him about auditioning for Arcanium Idol, and he caved in. He was very sure he would humiliate himself, dreaded it tremendously.
Speaking of things he dreaded, for Valentine's Day, Hayner was forced into a date with Sasarai, whom he did not know. Things went well on the 'date' thankfully enough, as they went to eat, and then saw the movie Ghostrider, which Hayner thought was lame.
After this, Roxas messaged Hayner, and asked him about his feelings for Seifer. As usual, Hayner attempted to change the subject or dodge the question, but Roxas actually had a spine this time and refused to let go of the issue. Feeling cornered, Hayner fled to the belltower to think, but was incredibly surprised to find that Roxas could use the darkness to follow him. After some yelling, Hayner revealed he had no idea how he felt, and decided to think on it until he had an answer.
He came up with an answer, and invited Seifer to his apartment to tell him in person. He told Seifer he liked him as well, and Seifer ended up spending the night at Hayner's apartment. And the next night, and so on this pattern continued until Ares went onto Storm Watch, in which case Seifer was forced to stay the night or risk getting hit by lightning trying to make it back to Arcadia. Seifer ended up staying until the weather cleared up, and they both pretty much spent that time cooped up and at one point got drunk.
Finally, the weekend of the auditions for Arcanium Idol came around, and Hayner ended up performing Flagpole Sitta. Somehow, the judges passed him onto the next round; Hayner is still incredibly confused by this. After the auditions, Hayner went with Seifer and Roxas to the amusement park in Cerberus (which was still damaged from the storm, but the good rides were still open.)
After going to the park, Seifer and Hayner have a chat over the network and Seifer asks Hayner to be with him. Hayner says yes and takes a train over to Arcadia. So far, the relationship is incredibly strange, as weird things keep happening.
The newest 'strange occurence' is the gender change that has resulted. Hayner made the full transformation into a woman, and is not remotely pleased. (He has the full works going on: breasts, high pitched voice, hips, etc. His hair also refuses to style and he has to leave it alone; it has also gotten a bit longer.) He bound his chest since it was causing him discomfort, and is deathly afraid of getting a period; he's hoping the effects will wear off soon.
On the first day that the gender change occured, Hayner and Seifer got into an emotional screaming match over the network and Hayner went to Arcadia to give Seifer his coat back. (Seriously, this cycle's never gonna end.) Hayner ended up spending the weekend there, as he did not want to attend school that Friday, but went back to school and work on Monday, seeing as he was no longer too bothered by the change (because it was happening to everyone else as well.) His first day back at school was spent conversing with others, and discussing who made the ugliest girls/boys and the hottest girls/boys.
Luckily, the gender mishap ended before Hayner got a period, so he was incredibly relieved. He met Godot soon afterward, and showed him to the nearest coffee shop. (And was incredibly weirded out by the amount of coffee the man drank.) Godot offered to make Hayner his apprentice in exchange for police information, but Hayner rejected his offer, not wanting lose his job, or be terminated. He hung out with Roxas shortly afterward, and continued to be a bad influence on Roxas, attempting to convince him to ditch school with him in order to go skateboarding.
Before they could get this idea into motion however, some sort of conflict seems to have sprung up between Roxas and Axel. Hayner knows something is up, and that it must be bad, but he doesn't know exactly what is going on, which is irritating him. His impatience starts getting the better of him, seeing as Roxas is refusing to talk to him about it, and he really wanted to hunt Roxas down. However, he doesn't.
Eventually, Hayner and Roxas seem to get over the little dispute, and begin speaking again, though Hayner has kept himself out of taking sides, or anything similar in the whole situation.
The earthquake hits, and Hayner isn't too concerned, aside from not having a way to get to Arcadia, and the bump on the back of his head from when fell against the doorframe while the ground was trembling. He is however, irritated that he can't use his appliances to make his instant meals.
Following reconstruction, school ended for Hayner, and summer vacation began. So far, he hasn't been doing much except work; his mail job recently being made more complicated by Albel's conditions for double his salary.
